RG3 to Undergo Complete Knee Reconstruction

In a bit of a late night update, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen has informed everyone that Dr. James Andrews will perform Robert Griffin III’s surgery in about six hours. That isn’t the breaking news, the breaking news is that they have already diagnosed that the ACL graft of RG3’s 2009 surgery is completely torn and he will indeed need a full reconstruction of his knee.

Official word is that RG3 did indeed tear both his ACL and LCL during Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks. Reports earlier suggested that the ACL/LCL would take longer to heal then a MCL/ACL like running back Adrian Peterson suffered last year, but Mortensen has the recovery process projected at only being six-eight months for the quarterback.

If he is able to return in time for the start of the season, you would have to expect a new type of offense to be in play. The read-option would not be an ideal system for a quarterback returning from knee reconstruction to play in.
