Weber received a two-minute boarding minor on the play (and an additional two for unsportsmanlike conduct). If the first penalty sounds familiar, it’s probably because Pittsburgh D Kris Letang was whistled for the same exact thing against the Jets before Shanahan nailed him with a two-game suspension. But we already now by the title of the article that Weber has avoided the suspension circle, for now anyways.
Weber will, however, be fined $2500 — money that will go to the Player’s Emergency Assistance Fund.
Although, the boarding penalty was Weber’s second in as many games (he nailed Jordan Eberle Tuesday in Edmonton.) Turns out our speculation of a potential “repeat offender” tag was wrong — don’t worry, it won’t be the last time — as Weber escaped suspension where Pittsburgh’s Kris Letang didn’t.
In fact, Weber’s punishment is much more in line with the $2500 New York Rangers F Mats Zuccarello got dinged for boarding LA’s Kyle Clifford during the NHL Premiere game in Sweden.
Has Shanahan made the right call? On video, maybe not considering what happened to Letang but one thing is certain…Shanahan is not going to just sit around and let certain things and hits slide on by him.
