I grew up watching Mike Tyson knock out opponent after opponent. During the time that Tyson was at the top of his fighting career, you also had Evander Holyfield, Riddick Bowe, Lennox Lewis and even an old George Foreman. It was exciting and was the main weight class that you wanted to see. Aside from top lower weight class boxers like Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad, Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker and a young Shane Mosley the heavyweight division was the cream of the crop
Even before my time you had probably the best of the best heavyweight boxers in Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Rocky Marciano and Joe Louis. Some of those guys were around during my grandfather’s time, but they were tough fighters and have no similarities to the fighters that are representing the heavyweight division nowadays. To me, it’s pretty appalling the product that is being displayed now with the division and I’m waiting for someone to save it.
This day in age we have names like Klitcshko, Povetkin, Adamek, Dimitrenko and Helenius as the top fighters in the heavyweight division. Unfortunately, many people can’t even pronounce their names and they are all foreigners who don’t really get much television time over in the states. Another problem with them is the simple fact that they are boring, slow fighters who bring absolutely no excitement to boxing. No one really cares who they are and it’s really a shame which is very devastating to the sport.
Boxing fans want to see the heavyweight division bring excitement and talent back to the sport. I can at least say that the Klitschko brothers are dominant, but no one wants to see them and they refuse to fight each other which will not allow the champion to have all of the titles.
I’m ready for the next big star to step up and make a change for the heavyweight champions of the past.
