Four-star 2018 quarterback Cameron Rising is now an Oklahoma Sooner. He announced his commitment to the Sooners Sunday, August 7. He became the first quarterback commit in Oklahoma’s 2018 recruiting class. With his commitment, Oklahoma has the eighth-ranked 2018 recruiting class nationally and first in the Big 12. Oklahoma beat out Alabama, UCLA, LSU, TCU, Miami, Michigan and others for his services.
Rising was also named to the 2018 ESPN 300 class at number 128 on the list. The Oklahoma Sooners are getting a gun-slinger in Cameron Rising. If throwing for over 3,000 yards and 40 touchdowns in his sophomore year doesn’t give you that impression, then maybe seeing some film on him will. Cameron Rising had a first love of basketball but around his eighth grade year, he knew football was the sport he wanted to play to take him to new heights. He’s thankful to Matt Rosene for teaching him how to be a quarterback.
“I’d say the guy that taught me the [quarterback position], throwing the ball, techniques, everything. His name is Matt Rosene. He’s married to my second aunt, my dad’s cousin I guess you could say. He’s like family, he and my dad grew up together, played youth football together,” he said.
Cameron Rising is a four star 2018 quarterback for Newbury Park High School in Newbury Park, California. He threw for 3,213 passing yards, 40 touchdowns and one interception as a sophomore. He also ran the ball 79 times for 756 yards and 11 touchdowns. According to the 247Sports Composite, he is the sixth best pro style quarterback and 20th best player in California.
“I’ve been told I’m good but I’m still not at the point where I want to be. I still want to keep getting better. I know people always tell me that I’m good, I still think I can [get] better and I should be better.”
Here is what Newbury Park football head coach Jason Klein had to say about his quarterback’s development.
“Quite a ways. Last year we had a pretty stiff quarterback competition coming into the season and it was kind of back and forth with him and a couple of guys coming into the season. As we went into the summer, this year was different, we didn’t have a competition between him and anyone else. This allowed him to continually get the reps and see a lot more things during the summer so he [has] come a long ways.”
Klein said that college coaches love Rising’s accuracy, athleticism and quick release on his throws.
“His accuracy was number one, the area we live in out here in California, we’re close to the coast so we get a nice breeze. Often when they see him throw, they see him throw when we have a lot of wind and he’s able to accurate even with the wind.”

The six-foot-one, 195 pound, Ventura, California native has close to 20 scholarship offers from some of the best Division I schools in the country including: Alabama, UCLA, LSU, TCU, Miami, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Arizona State.
“It’s been a dream come true. Not in my wildest dreams did I ever expect to have these offers right now. If you told me that I’d have some of the schools like Alabama, LSU, Michigan, I would’ve thought you were crazy and say I sure hope so. It really is a dream come true. I couldn’t ask for anything better,” Rising said about his recruiting process.
He said he has high interest in all of the schools aforementioned above and he plans to make his commitment decision his birthday next year, May 13.
Rising believes he can do it all with the football in his hands. Throwing the ball, running the ball, it doesn’t matter to him.
”There’s a reason I like playing quarterback because 99 percent of the time I’m the one touching the ball. I like making the hard decisions.”
He also loves the pressure the quarterback position gives because if the team wins, it’s on the quarterback, if the team loses, it’s on the quarterback. He doesn’t, however, believe there is a best part or parts of his game. If he works on one thing, he tries to get better at everything.
“I don’t want to be known as ‘oh he’s just a running quarterback or he’s just a pocket passer.’ I want to be the pocket passer that can run. That’s what I tell my coach. Whenever he asks me what I want to be considered, I tell him I want to be a pocket passer that can run.”
As a junior this year, he wants to win as many games as possible and help his team as much as possible. When his time is all said and done at Newbury Park High, he wants to be remembered as a guy who loved playing football and had fun doing it. Even if he is not remembered by people at Newbury Park, Cameron Rising wants to have a championship banner to say he won something.
