A few days after headlines indicated that Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James is frustrated and concerned about the team’s ability to put together a roster that can better compete with Golden State” it appears Kyrie Irving is voicing his concerns as well.
After the Cavaliers lost in to the Golden State Warriors in mostly convincing fashion in the NBA Finals everyone, players included, assumed that the Cavs would be aggressively pursuing another superstar to pair alongside James and Irving.
Unfortunately no deal has taken place as of yet and many of the available superstars have found new homes.
There is still a possibility that the Cavs could land the likes of New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony but recent reports indicate it’s more likely he ends up with the Houston Rockets.
Irving, in an interview with Sports Illustrated‘s Maggie Gray, had some interesting things to say regarding the current state of the Cavs after a slow offseason.
“I understand we’re in a very peculiar place,” Irving said at Sports Illustrated‘s Fashionable 50 event (h/t Bleacher Report).
“We just have to, you know, make sure all our pieces are aligned first, and then we go from there. It’s just summer time, a lot of craziness going on in the NBA. Best to just observe and then see what happens, but obviously there are some things that I’m pretty sure our organization wants to do, and we’ll go from there.”
The Cavs have certainly tried to pull of big deals. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Cleveland was close to acquiring Indiana Pacers forward Paul George prior to his trade to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
“[Cavaliers assistant GM] Koby Altman was very close to a deal on June 30 for Paul George,” Wojnarowski said, per Slam‘s Ryne Nelson. “It was so close in fact that Indiana was about to give permission to Paul George to get on the phone with [Cavs owner] Dan Gilbert. Indiana backed out of it, and did the Oklahoma City deal.”
The only additions that the Cavs can boast are the signings of Jeff Green and Jose Calderon as well as the re-signing of Kyle Korver.
The Cavs will have to amp up their efforts if they plan on landing the likes of Anthony before the Rockets swoop in and complete their rumored trade.
