Canelo Alvarez Keeps On Winning And Raging Babe Returns To Casino Del Sol

Published

Canelo Alvarez signs richest contract in sports history!- On October 17, Canelo Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs) – the undisputed king of pay-per-view boxing – ushered in a new era in the sport by signing a 365 million 11-fight deal with global sports streaming leader DAZN. The journey begins Saturday, Dec. 15 when Canelo makes his first appearance at the historic Madison Square Garden challenging Rocky Fielding (27-1, 15 KOs) for his WBA Super Middleweight World Title.

As part of the partnership, Golden Boy Promotions will put on up to 10 high-caliber fight nights per year that will stream live on DAZN beginning in early 2019.
The historic deal marks a major change in the boxing landscape, where its biggest stars traditionally fought on pay-per-view. Now, sports fans can view Canelo’s fights and the deep Golden Boy Promotions stable for a low monthly subscription cost. These fights will be available in all DAZN markets, including the United States, Canada, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Japan.
“I’ve always liked a challenge, and this is yet another challenge in my career, Being part of this historic deal will require me to prepare myself even more and offer fans even better performances. At the same time, I am humbled to be selected to lead this new vision for the sport of boxing, which will without a doubt be for the benefit of the fans.” said Canelo Alvarez.
“This is easily one of the best days in the growing history of Golden Boy Promotions,”
said Oscar De La Hoya, Golden Boy Promotions Chairman and CEO.
“We are committed to making this sport as accessible as possible and at an affordable price for all the fans. My dream has been to make boxing a sport for all. DAZN has the perfect platform to make this dream come true, and with the biggest star in the sport at the helm of this journey, I have no doubts that we will succeed in unimaginable ways.”
But Canelo Alvarez wasn’t done winning just yet..
Last night on October 18, Canelo received the RingMagazine Middleweight World Title and the Pound-For-Pound Championship Belt at the Intercontinental Hotel in Los Angeles.
Canelo, who also holds the WBC, WBA, and Lineal Middleweight World Titles, will move up to 168 pounds to challenge Rocky Fielding (27-1, 15 KOs) for his WBA Super Middleweight World Title in a 12-round main event on Saturday, Dec. 15 at Madison Square Garden and streamed live on DAZN.
Canelo went on to say: “I want to thank God, my team and my family. I want to thank Golden Boy as well. Having a belt like this is a responsibility, and this is a responsibility that I plan to undertake. I never imagined that my success would reach this magnitude. This just shows that with discipline, hard work and love for the sport, one can achieve anything. A lot has changed in one year. It’s been a big change. I’m going to defend this title with honor. See you all on December 15.”
Oscar De La Hoya added: “The Ring Magazine World Title is the most prestigious title in boxing. In order to earn it, the top two fighters in the division have to fight. The pound-four-pound belt has been held by great fighters. Bernard Hopkins had it. Pernell Whitaker had it. I had it, and now Canelo Alvarez has it. We are very proud of his accomplishments.”
Ring Magazine editor in chief, Doug Fischer went on to say: “The lineage of the Ring Magazine Championship belt goes back to Jack Dempsey. The greatest fighters of every era held the Ring Magazine Title. The pound-for-pound title was created in 1993, and it was presented to Pernell Whitaker after his controversial draw against Julio Cesar Chavez, Sr. This is brilliant company that Canelo joins. The belt was with Whitaker, Oscar De La Hoya, Roy Jones, Jr. and Bernard Hopkins.”
Canelo vs. Fielding is a 12-round fight for the WBA Super Middleweight World
Title presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Matchroom Boxing. The event is sponsored by Tecate, “THE OFFICIAL BEER OF BOXING,” and Hennessy “Never Stop. Raging Babe Returns To Casino Del Sol With GUERRA DE GALLOS:

On the heels of her sold out July 17th event at the award-winning Casino Del Sol Resort & Casino, Michelle Rosado’s Raging Babe returns to the same venue on Saturday, November 17th, when super featherweights Jensen Ramirez of Tucson, and Thomas Valdez of Nogales collide in the main event, outdoors at the AVA Amphitheater. Tucson’s Alfonso Olvera returns ahead of his anticipated rematch of his sensational bout with Wilberth Lopez on July’s card, and Tucson’s Christopher Gonzalez faces Nogales’ Judas Estrada in a four-round welterweight contest.

Main event fighters Jensen Ramirez (6-2-3, 1KO) and Thomas Valdez (16-4-2, 6KO), have both called Tucson home, but the similarities between the two end there.

Ramirez, 26, is an award-winning tattoo artist when he is not fighting.  He defeated Sierra Vista’s Jesus Arevalo at Raging Babe’s July event, after a two-year layoff, earning a 6-round majority decision over the often-avoided Arevalo.  If his bout with Arevalo was about redemption, his upcoming bout with Valdez is about showing Tucson, and all of Arizona, that he belongs in the mix with the top super featherweights in the state.

Valdez, 29, last fought December 1, 2017,  when he scored a wide unanimous decision in an 8-round bout versus a far more experienced Daniel Valenzuela of Mexico.  A hand injury has kept him on the shelf. Coming from a fighting family, Valdez is trained and managed by his uncle, Oscar Valdez, Sr., who also happens to be the father of WBO Featherweight Champion Oscar Valdez, Jr.  Thomas Valdez will be fighting in Arizona for the first time since a 2013 six-round decision loss to undefeated prospect Victor Castro, of Phoenix, Arizona.

Both Valdez and Ramirez will walk into the ring on November 17th with something to prove – to Tucson boxing fans, and to themselves.

Tucson favorite Alfonso Olvera (10-5-1, 4KO) will make his return on November 17. Olvera has his sights set on an eventual rematch with Wilberth Lopez (23-9,15KO), but cannot afford to stumble along the way. The two thrilled the Guerro De Gallo crowd in the card’s main event in July, ending in a split decision that favored Lopez. The decision pleased some and disappointed others in the sold out crowd, and since the bout, both camps and fans who were in attendance that night have called for a rematch.  For his part, Olvera has no intentions of looking past his November 17th opponent.

The Gonzalez-Estrada contest features two local prospects who had the fans on their feet during their separate July bouts at Guerra De Gallos.  Estrada (1-1, 1 KO) lost that night to Jose Barrera, of Phoenix, but the split decision had the crowd in an uproar. Gonzalez also was in a tight one that night, earning a majority decision over Sergio Lopez.

“When fighters fight – when local fighters fight, and aren’t afraid to step into the ring with a friend, former sparring partner or a tough guy, you’re going to get great fights,” said Raging Babe President and Promoter Michelle Rosado.  “That’s what I’m about and that’s what my events are about. Boxing is at its best when the fights are 50-50 fights, and when fans get their money’s worth, and they definitely did that on July card. This event is no different. Hats off to these guys for all being willing to step up and fight in their hometowns. Tucson, if you’re thirsty for good, live boxing, get ready for a tall drink of water on November 17th.”

Heavyweight Edgar Medina makes his professional debut, Manny Guajardo, Nick Rhoads, and Mike Martinez return, and Arturo Resendiz makes his US debut.

Tickets for Guerra De Gallos start at $25, and go on sale Thursday, October 18 at 10:00 a.m.  Tickets may be purchased at the Casino Del Sol gift shop, online at www.casinodelsol.com, or by calling 520-333-5150.

Raging Babe and Casino Del Sol will be hosting a press conference on at 2:00 p.m. on October 25, 2018.

Crawford/Khan & Garcia/Granados Prediction

Published

on

Photo Courtesy of Top Rank Boxing

Bud Crawford (34-0, 25 KOs) VS. Amir Khan (33-4, 20 KOs)- First of all, I love Khans bravery, the kid is always willing to lock horns with anybody. Thing is that bravery and overconfidence is what has always hurt Khan in his battles.

Khan is the type of boxer that is so fast that he will always outbox you right until the second that he doesn’t anymore, I know, I know sounds strange. What I mean by that is that Khan builds up leads but then he get overzealous and so comfortable with his blinding hand speed that he then leads with his chin.

So with that being said, I am expecting to see Khan outbox Bud early and will beat Bud to the punch enough to take the majority of the first 6 rounds.

Bud will then pick his spots by switching to a southpaw stance and will time an overconfident Khan jumping in and will walk him into a big right hand. Bud’s body punching and ability to land his own jab over Khan’s rapid jab will be key.

Give me Bud to take it by 9th round TKO. Bud will step it up another level and put it on Khan so bad that he will stop Khan late forcing Khan’s corner to wave it off in round 9.

Danny Garcia (34-2, 20 KOs) VS. Adrien Granados (20-6-2, 14 KOs)- I am expecting for Granados to be exactly who he is, so I see Granados pressuring Garcia enough to make it uncomfortable enough to dog Garcia out to bag in a handful of rounds.

Garcia must employ his heavy underrated jab to box Granados from the outside. Granados will need rough up Garcia as much as possible to keep the fight on the inside, similar to the Porter blueprint.

I see Garcia landing enough jabs and the harder judge friendly punches to take it in a 8 rounds to 4 unanimous decision that may appear closer due to a few hard to score rounds.

25th Annual Muhammad Ali Celebrity Fight Night, A Charity Knockout Event

Published

on

The stars came out last night to give, show support, perform, and to continue to raise money and awareness in hopes of one day find a cure to knockout Parkinson’s disease.

Going back to year number 1, The first ever event was held at the Ritz-Carlton operated on a much smaller scale than today, which is now held at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa.

At the very first Celebrity Fight Night With the help of Phoenix Suns Charles Barkley, Dan Majerle, and the valley of the sun’s very own Louie Espinoza, Tony Baltazar, and boxing champion Michael Carbajal who by the way fought in the ring with over sized boxing gloves.

The ”Puttin on the Fists at The Ritz” first Celebrity Fight Night scored a knockout win and is STILL punching on through today for the Greatest Of All Time, The late great Muhammad Ali.

Last night I was honored to attend and speak to a few of the stars, one was NFL legendary kicker Nick Lowery, Mr. Lowery now spends most of his time at charitable endeavors and advocating for alternative medicine research and is also a spokesman for Kannalife, Inc to raise awareness for CTE and players safety in hopes of one day having intercellular “helmets,” like Kannalife’s CBD and KLS-13019, is so important to potentially treat the brain.

I asked Lowery what is his favorite Ali memory, and Lowery’s response: ” Taking Ali to the NBA All-Star game one year as we sat behind Jay-Z and Beyonce and watching Beyonce wave to Ali, Beyonce spoke to us, she is the sweetest person. Also taking Ali to the locker rooms and watching Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, and all the other all stars turn into children at the sight of seeing their hero the greatest of all time Muhammad Ali walk through the doors, what an experience that was.”

In asking the very same question to R&B Singer Brian McKnight, ”I have so many Ali memories but my favorite was watching Ali knockout George Foreman at home with my dad. The odds were against Ali and Ali being the great fighter that he was he beat the odds and stopped a much younger powerful puncher in Foreman. You know, I am still a big boxing fan today, I enjoy watching Tyson Fury out of the current heavyweights.”

And what did legendary former champion boxer, Micheal Carbajal have to say? ”It’s truly an honor to attend this great event, at the very first one proceeds went to my 9th street boxing gym and now 24 years later it’s still going strong, a great charity”. Mr. Carbajal went on to talk some boxing with me,

Carbajal- ” You see Spence/Garcia?”

Me- ” Yes, it was brutal, what did you think?”

Carbajal- ” Not good for Mikey Garcia at all, but he is still my favorite current boxer, and he beats everybody at 135 pounds if he can make the weight there. Mikey would knockout Lomachenko in 4 rounds at 135.”

Me- ”Wow, you really think that? Both are great technical boxers but I can’t see a 4 round fight between them, so you really think it would only take Mikey 4 rounds to stop Lomachenko?”

Carbajal- ” I KNOW so!”

Special honorees for the evening include fabled American music producer and 27-time Grammy Award-winner Quincy Jones, Arizona State University President Dr. Michael Crow and Dr. Abraham Lieberman, the medical director of the Movement Disorders Clinic at Barrow Neurological Institute and Renee Parsons of the Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation.

March 16: Arlington, Texas (Fox PPV)

Errol Spence Jr.(24-0) Vs. Mikey Garcia(39-0) For Spence’s IBF Welterweight Title- For starters, I would like to point out that I really admire Garcia for daring to be great in jumping up 1 or 2 weight classes(depending on who you ask) to face the much bigger Spence.

Thing is though, that there are weight classes for a reason and in this bout, Mikey may have bitten off more than he can chew. I mean on paper, Mikey is the sharper more technical boxer, yet thing is that no fight is ever fought on paper.

Mikey is a brilliant boxer that takes subtle steps towards his foe in which doing so it places him at all times within striking distance. So in short, Mikey never over extends himself so he never wastes punches or motion.

Spence on the other hand is a big and strong welterweight that is known to carve up his opponents mid section. Spence also has a hard stiff jab that he employs often and very well.

In this clash I am expecting Spence to hurt Mikey with right hook body shots and short left hooks upstairs. Mikey will need to box in and out and must look to keep Spence turning.

I see Spence taking this in a 8 rounds to 4 comfortable unanimous win. But I also would be far from shocked if Spence lands something nasty to stop Garcia in his tracks late in the fight around the 9th round.

Bonus Pick: David Benavidez(20-0) over J’ Leon Love(24-2-1) by a brutal 8th round TKO.
