As the MLB trade deadline approaches, New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard is gaining confidence that he will remain with the team, despite his name being mentioned heavily in numerous trade rumor reports.
Syndergaard took the hill on Tuesday night against the Chicago White Sox and delivered 7 1/2 strong innings, limiting the White Sox to 5 hits, while striking out 11.
Following the game, which the Mets won 5-2, Syndergaard was asked if he was confident that he would stay with the Mets.
“I am,” Syndergaard said, according to ESPN’s Bradford Doolittle. “Thor” also mentioned that he had spoken with the Mets’ front office “a little bit here and there, but I don’t think anything is going to happen.”
Syndergaard is also growing tired of the constant trade rumors, which had been popping up since the winter, and gaining momentum over the several weeks.
“It’s getting kind of old, a little bit,” Syndergaard said. “I guess it’s kind of encouraging at the same time.”
As far as his on-field performance is concerned, Syndergaard was impressive against the White Sox.
“I thought he was electric,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said. “Had all his pitches working, pitched that deep in the game. He did a tremendous job. That was probably the best I’ve seen him.”
With the Mets on a roll of late, and making a few moves already, they could be primed to make a playoff push instead of selling off one of their front line pitchers.
“They know we’re playing good baseball,” Callaway said. “We’re not trying to send messages to anybody. We’re just trying to win as many games as we possibly can. That’s been our goal [since] the beginning of the season.”
“It’s always in the back of my mind,” Syndergaard said. “I try not harp on things that are outside of my control.”
“If that were to happen, it would really be a bittersweet moment,” Syndergaard said. “Just because of the fan base, the guys in this clubhouse. I still hope everyone is in this clubhouse tomorrow, past July [31].”
