Tedy Bruschi Suffers Stroke

2 Min Read

Former New England Patriots linebacker and current ESPN analyst Tedy Bruschi has suffered a stroke, according to an official statement from the Bruschi family, via ESPN’s Field Yates.

“Yesterday afternoon, Tedy had a stroke, known as a TIA” the statement read. “He recognized his warning signs immediately: arm weakness, face drooping and speech difficulties. Tedy is recovering well, and would like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff at Sturdy Memorial Hospital for all they have done. Tedy and his family thank you for your ongoing encouragement, and kindly ask for privacy at this time.”

Per the announcement, Bruschi suffered a stroke, known as TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack), and immediately went to get medical help once he noticed the warning signs.

According to the Stroke Association, a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) is often called a mini-stroke, but it’s really a major warning:

“TIA is a temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain. Since it doesn’t cause permanent damage, it’s often ignored. But this is a big mistake. TIAs may signal a full-blown stroke ahead.”

Bruschi also had a stroke back in February 2005, following the Patriots Super Bowl victory, and learned that he had a congenital heart defect that produced a hole in his heart.

Bruschi would have a procedure to repair the hole, and sat out the 2005 season. Bruschi would return to the field in 2016, but would be limited to 9 games. He would go on to play 3 more seasons before announcing his retirement prior to the 2009 season.
