The Golden State Warriors may have lost superstar Kevin Durant in free agency to the Brooklyn Nets, but they will be ensuring that Durant is always honored for his time with the team.
According to a statement from Warriors co-chairman and CEO Joe Lacob (h/t ESPN), Durant’s number 35 jersey will be retired, adding that Durant “carried himself with class and dignity both on and off the court.”
“Today, as he starts a new chapter in his incredible career, we thank KD for all of his contributions, for being an integral part to one of the most prolific runs in NBA history and wish him well as he continues his Hall of Fame journey,” Lacob said. “As long as I am Co-Chairman of this team, no player will ever wear #35 for the Warriors again.”
Durant won two NBA championships and two MVP awards during his three seasons with the Warriors, that ended on a sour note after he tore his Achilles during the 2019 NBA Finals, which Golden State lost to the Toronto Raptors.
