Cincinnati Reds reliever Michael Lorenzen played a number of different roles for the Reds on Thursday, becoming a swiss-army knife for his team as they defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 8-5.
Lorenzen became the first player since New York Yankees legend Babe Ruth to hit a homer, get a victory on the mound, and play in the outfield in the same game.
Ruth did so back on June 13th, 1921, according to Elias.
Lorenzen notched a victory on the mound, make an appearance in the outfield, and his a two-run homerun to power the Reds to victory.
“That’s pretty exciting,” Lorenzen said, according to ESPN. “I’m going to have to look into what Babe Ruth would be making today and sit down with [the front office]. It’s one of those funny little baseball stats. I’m definitely honored to be part of that. It’s cool to be part of a Babe Ruth stat.”
The Reds snapped the Phillies three-game winning streak in the process.
