The NHL levied a three-game suspension on San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane for physical abuse of officials, according to ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski.

Kane and Vegas Golden Knights’ defenseman Deryk Engelland got into an altercation after the Engelland held Kane’s stick following a hit.

When Engelland cross-checked Kane, Kane hit back with a slash that seemed so also make contact with linesman Kiel Murchison. When Kane skated back up the ice, Murchison grabbed Kane’s jersey in an effort to stop the altercation with Engelland from escalating, and both tumbled down to the ice.

Both Kane and Engelland were given misconduct penalties, and Kane was ejected from the preseason game for abuse of officials.

The three-game suspension was automatic as Kane’s penalty was classified as a Category III offense.

Kane expressed his anger over the call following the game.

“I get kicked out of the game for getting jumped from behind by a referee. I’ve never seen a ref take five strides,” Kane said postgame.

“If you look at his face, he’s getting all this power, and he’s trying to drive me into the ice, which is what he did. That’s unbelievable. Talk about abuse of an official? How about abuse of a player? It’s an absolute joke.”
