The Washington Redskins are undergoing a major overhaul, and are expected to bring in former Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera to be their next head coach, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The organization wasn’t done making changes there, as they have fired team president Bruce Allen, who has been the primary voice in the team’s football matter since 2012, and was originally hired back in 2009 to be owner Daniel Snyder’s top executive.
River, 57, becomes the seventh head coach hired by Snyder.
“As this season concludes, Bruce Allen has been relieved of his duties as President of the Washington Redskins and is no longer with the organization. Like our passionate fan base, I recognize we have not lived up to the high standards set by great Redskins teams, coaches and players who have come before us. As we reevaluate our team leadership, culture and process of winning football games, I am excited for the opportunities that lie ahead to renew our singular focus and purpose of bringing championship football back to Washington D.C.”
Rivera compiled a 76-63-1 record with the Panthers, and while he did construct a big turnaround when he initially took the reigns, he led the Panthers to the playoffs only four times, including their trip to the Super Bowl back in 2015.
Rivera will now look to turn around a franchise that hasn’t seen the playoffs since 2015 and hasn’t won a playoff game since 2005. Rivera will also look to overhaul a culture that has been ripped by players, and the media, for most of the past decade.
Rivera will have young quarterback Dwayne Haskins to work with, and the Redskins own the 2nd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
