Panthers Releasing Cam Newton

3 Min Read

The Cam Newton era in Carolina will officially come to an end later today as the Carolina Panthers are expected to release the former MVP signal caller, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Newton had spent nine years with the organization, highlighted by the 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player award and a trip to the Super Bowl, in a losing effort.

The Panthers completed a deal with former New Orleans Saints backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who appears to be the starter moving forward, giving him a three-year, $63 million deal to join the team.

Additionally, the Panthers signed XFL quarterback P.J. Walker.

When the Panthers do officially release Newton, it will save them $19.1 million in cap space with only $2 million in dead money.

Newton, 30, was being shopped by the team, but the Panthers were unable to find a suitable deal for the former MVP. Newton is continuing to rehab from foot surgery that was performed last December and with teams currently unable to bring him in for a workout or physical, due to the coronavirus pandemic, it’s not surprising there was little interest in trading for Newton.

“Right now he’s worth nothing until such time as people can work him out and give him a physical — their own doctors give him a physical and then work him out,” Pro Football Hall of Fame executive Bill Polian said of Newton, according to ESPN. “It’s unfortunate. He’s got to prove he’s healthy for a number of reasons, and right now he can’t do that, for a number of reasons.”

“I wouldn’t be willing to give up anything until I knew he was healthy,” Polian said.

Newton had been linked to the Los Angeles Chargers, who will be looking to find their next quarterback after parting ways with longtime franchise quarterback Phillip Rivers, who ultimately signed a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts.

Injuries will be a concern for any team interested in signing Newton. Newton missed 14 games last season with the Lisfranc injury and the last two games of the 2018 regular season with a shoulder injury, that later required surgery.
