NFL Doctor Says Tua Tagovailoa Hip Injury Could Be Issue at 35, But Not 25

4 Min Read

As every NFL team and fan prepares for Thursday’s kickoff to a highly anticipated NFL Draft, there is non-stop chatter about what one team will do when they officially are on the clock and in desperate need of a franchise quarterback.

There has been plenty of discussion and debate on if the Miami Dolphins will take a risk on Alabama signal caller Tua Tagovailoa, who had a myriad of injuries including a hip injury during his college career, or opt for the safer choice, and less regarded, Justin Herbert.

Injuries could push Tagovailoa down the draft board, and there are legitimate questions about his durability as he steps up to the NFL level.

Tagovailoa suffered a dislocated hip with a posterior wall fracture (along with a broken nose and concussion) during a November game against Mississippi State.

But according to one NFL team doctor, the hip injury Tagovailoa is recovering from likely won’t be an immediate issue.

“These contact injuries are part of the game,” the doctor said, according to NBC Sports’ Peter King. “You ask yourself, ‘Is this guy injury-prone, or does he have a bulls-eye on him because he’s a crucial player on his team?’ I’ve seen a few of the hip dislocations in football, and my experience is that if you lose blood supply to the hip for a long enough period of time, you’re in trouble. I don’t think that was the case here. As I see it, the effects of the dislocation might show up when he’s 35, but not when he’s 25.”

Apparently, teams are already opting not to take the risk on Tua.

According to The Athletic’s Michael Lombardi, at least one team has failed a physical on Tua, but not just on his hip, but on a multitude of injuries.

Come Thursday evening, we will see if the Dolphins are willing to take that risk. A healthy Tua would have been a tough decision for the Cincinnati Bengals at #1, but they are expected to select LSU signal caller Joe Burrow.

The Dolphins are expected to draft Tua, and if he can take a year to get 100%, which Miami is setup to allow, then he could be the elite franchise quarterback that the team has long awaited.

Thursday will give us all the answers!
