When former Carolina Panthers MVP quarterback Cam Newton was initially released into the free agency market, it was widely suggested that Newton would be a fit for the Los Angeles Chargers, but a deal never materialized.
Instead, the Chargers drafted Justin Herbert and decided to stick with veteran signal caller Tyrod Taylor as a bridge quarterback as opposed to signing Newton, who remains a free agent, but Chargers’ head coach Anthony Lynn says that the team “absolutely” considered signing Newton.
“Absolutely, Cam is a tremendous quarterback,” Lynn stated. “He’s been MVP of this league, he’s led his team to the Super Bowl and he’s healthy now from what I hear. Cam is going to be on somebody’s roster and he’s going to help somebody win a few games, but yeah, we did take a look at that, sure.”
“With Tyrod Taylor, Easton Stick — those are guys that a lot of people don’t talk about,” Lynn said, during an interview with CBS Sports. “[Stick] was a Division I-AA [star] — he won like three national championships. … He’s a hell of a leader, hell of a professional and I think he has a bright future in this league one day.
“But with him, Tyrod Taylor and knowing that we had an opportunity to get one picking sixth in the draft — all those decisions came into play when talking about Cam.”
Newton, 31, has been unable to find a new team, despite a few obvious fits popping up during various times in the offseason, such as the Chargers and the Chicago Bears.
Newton has been training and rehabbing, and the last update indicated that Newton is motivated for his next gig.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, back in late May, Newton is “checking out well and he is hungrier than ever and eager for the next opportunity”, and is reportedly 100 percent recovered from his recent injuries.
