Atlanta Braves outfielder Nick Markakis has opted out of playing in the upcoming, shortened MLB season, according to Braves manager Brian Snitker (h/t ESPN).
Markakis, 36, becomes the second member of the Braves to opt out of the season as pitcher Felix Hernandez opted out earlier.
While speaking with the media on Monday, Snitker called Markakis “a backbone for our club” adding that he has “the utmost respect for Nick and support him 150%.”
Braves’ star first baseman Freddie Freeman tested positive for COVID-19 over this past weekend, and Markakis commented that “it’s a serious matter” and that he hoped that Freeman “heals up quickly.”
