Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes returned to the Chiefs practice facility for the firs time in months due to the COVID-19 pandemic and admitted he was a bit apprehensive before seeing the facility and Arrowhead Stadium.
“Definitely there’s going to be a little concern,” Mahomes said, according to ESPN’s Adam Teicher. “You’d be lying to say you had no concern.”
Mahomes got to tour the practice facility and the stadium, and what he saw alleviated his fears, for the most part, and now says he is comfortable everything has been reasonably done to protect him and other Chiefs players.
“It’s better than I thought coming in,” Mahomes said. “That’s kind of put my mind at ease, knowing that I’m going to be put in the best possible situation given this time.
“You can just see that the NFL and the NFLPA are really taking this seriously [with] the social distancing, the wearing a mask.”
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid also said he was comfortable with the working environment.
“People have gone to great ends to [protect players and coaches],” Reid said. “We’re as safe as you can be here.
“The dedication and staying disciplined when you leave this facility will be important. When you’re here, it’s a safe environment. You’ve got to continue that once you leave here.”
Mahomes quickly turned his attention to the upcoming season, and how the defending Super Bowl champions have their sights set on another Lombardi Trophy.
Mahomes also responded to comments from Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones and wide receiver Tyreek Hill who discussed the team winning multiple championships.
“You love the guys having goals,” Mahomes said. “They want to be in Kansas City for a long time. They want to win championships. They don’t want to be average. They want to be great every single year.
“They know that they’re going to have to go out there every single day and prove that.”
