Houston Astros’ first baseman Yuli Gurriel has agreed to a one-year contract, with an option for 2022, that guarantees $7 million, a pay cut from his prior salary, to remain with the Astros.
The new deal was announced prior to the Astros taking on the Minnesota Twins in Game 1 of their series on Tuesday evening.
Gurriel, 36, was set to earn $8.3 million in 2020, $3,074,074 prorated. Per his new deal, Gurriel earns a $6.5 million salary for 2021 and an $8 million club option for 2021 with a $500,000 buyout, and can earn $2 million in performance bonuses each year based on plate appearances: $250,000 each for 300 and 350, $350,000 apiece for 400 and 450, and $400,000 each for 500 and 550.
There are additional bonuses available for becoming an All Star, League Championship MVP, World Series MVP, Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, and league MVP awards as well.
Gurriel hit .232 with six homers and 22 RBIs in 57 games for Houston this season.
