The Dallas Cowboys have restructured the contract of defensive end DeMarcus Lawarence to position themselves for 2021 and continue to move towards a contract for quarterback Dak Prescott, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer.
Thanks to the restructuring of Lawrence’s contract, the Cowboys created $12 million in cap space. Lawrence had $15 million of his $16.9 million base salary converted into a signing bonus to create the additional space.
Dallas has restructured the deals of offensive linemen Tyron Smith and Zack Martin, and along with the reworking of Lawrence’s contract, have created around a total of $27 million in cap space.
Now they are arming up for 2021 and a new deal for Prescott, but due to league rules, the Cowboys and Prescott cannot sign a long-term deal until after this season.
