Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson says that the team is currently not considering taking quarterback Carson Wentz out of the starting lineup despite his struggles this season.
The Eagles tied the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday and are now 0-2-1 on the season, but Pederson says that the team is committed to Wentz.
“No, you don’t go there. That’s a knee-jerk reaction,” Pederson said, during an appearance on 94.1 WIP on Monday. “Carson’s our quarterback. We’re going to get it fixed. He is going to get it fixed.”
Wentz finished Sunday’s game 29-of-47 for 225 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, and although his touchdown late regulation is what forced overtime, he did not have a stellar day.
For his part, Pederson has taken some criticism for his odd decision to punt late in overtime on a 4th and 12 in Bengals’ territory, which assured the tie.
“Looking back, you probably put it in your quarterback’s hands to win the game,” Pederson said.
Thankfully for the Eagles, the NFC East has been horrid all around, so despite their poor record they remain only a half game out for first place in the division.
“We have a long season. … The whole division right now is not playing very good football,” Pederson said. “We’re not that far off.”
Eagles fans may have been calling for rookie Jalen Hurts to take the reigns, but it remains Wentz’s show, at least for now.
