While the writing seems to be on the wall, you can never count out the New York Jets from doing something ridiculous, and that includes a chance that head coach Adam Gase will return for 2021.

It sounds crazy, right?

And while it is extremely unlikely, Gase himself has said that he isn’t clear as to what his standing with the organization will be.

During a new conference, Gase responded to a local radio report indicating that he had already been fired as the team’s head coach.

“That was news to me,” Gase said, according to SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano. “No one has said that to me…You’re going to hate this answer, but it’s the best one I can give you: I learned when I was 22 years old, Nick Saban told me you do your job until somebody tells you different. That’s what I’m going to focus on.”

Gase has led the Jets to two late-season wins, when it appeared that the team was heading to a winless season, but for now, Gase is solely focused on the season finale against the New England Patriots, and not worried about his reputation as an offensive guru.

“I don’t know if worry is really the right word,” Gase said.  “It pisses me off because if there’s one side of the ball I want to make sure is right, that one has not happened. And that’s on me.”
