Yes, I had a hard time writing that headline and trying to stop myself from doing a constant re-read of what I typed, but the headline is completely descriptive of this article – Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving talking to the media on why he has been taking a stance on not talking to the media.
Yep. That’s about right.
Irving has been, for the past few weeks, using social media platforms such as Instagram to go along with written statements as his primary means of communications, despite the NBA’s requirement that healthy players be made available to the press corps before or after practices and games.
Irving has been steadfast in having no part of that, and was fined last week by the NBA, along with the Nets, for $25,000, a fine to which Irving replied to on Instagram by writing – “I pray we utilize the ‘fine money’ for the marginalized communities in need, especially seeing where our world is presently… I do not talk to Pawns. My attention is worth more.”
Irving elaborated on Monday.
“It’s really just about how I felt about the mistreatment of certain artists when we get to a certain platform of when we make decisions within our lives to have full control and ownership … We want to perform in a secure and protected space,” Irving said, according to ESPN’s Malika Andrews.
Irving was excited to get back on the court this past Sunday with teammates Kevin Durant, who made his return after an 18 month layoff due to injury.
“It’s a different show, it was a different stage, and it’s a new beginning in terms of what we’re building,” Irving said. “And moving forward with the pieces that we have here. And that includes 7-11, so get to know us.”
Irving also expressed excitement for playing for new head coach, and legendary point guard, Steve Nash.
“Steve’s been amazing,” Irving said. “He kind of commands the respect. I think I’ve got to take back my comments in terms of the head coach back a few months ago. But it’s just like, man, we have such a great synergy. Everyone feels like we’re coaching one another to be better, so I’m grateful for that.”
