The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to terms with free agent outfielder George Springer on a six-year, $150 million deal, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Springer is headed to the Blue Jays’ spring training facility in Dunedin, Florida, for a physical and once he passes that, the deal will become official. Springer’s new contract will be the largest given out by the franchise in their history.
Springer was a valuable member of the Houston Astros during the past four seasons, often the leadoff hitter and a spark plug for the offense. Springer turned down a one-year, $18.9 million qualifying offer from the Astros, which means that they will receive an extra draft pick in the amateur draft set for this July.
Springer set career highs with a .292 batting average, .591 slugging percentage, .383 on-base percentage and 6.2 WAR last season to go along with a team-high 14 homeruns.
Springer also brings solid defense to the Blue Jays outfield, and although he has played center field he could also slide to one of the corner outfield spots with Toronto.
