The Washington Football Team officially parted ways with veteran quarterback Alex Smith on Friday by releasing the 2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year who helped the team to an NFC East title and a playoff berth in 2020.
By releasing the 37-year old Smith, Washington saves $14.9 million against the cap with $8.6 million in dead money, and due to an insurance policy it held on Smith, Washington was able to recoup $1.1 million in prorated bonus money in each of the final three years of his contract, according to ESPN’s John Keim.
Smith made it clear to the organization that he wished to continue playing, however the team wanted to upgrade the quarterback position this offseason and given Smith’s age, it was only a matter of time before the two parted ways.
Smith could fetch some attention on the free agent market, particularly for a team looking for a veteran backup.
