Golden State Warriors superstar guard Stephen Curry passed Wilt Chamberlain as the All-Time scoring leader in franchise history after he dropped 53 points during Monday’s victory over the Denver Nuggets.
“It’s crazy,” Curry said, according to ESPN’s Nick Friedell. “Anytime you hear his name, it’s kind of daunting because you know his records are so hard to — some of them are even impossible to eclipse, I think. You understand how great of a player he was.
“I can’t remember how many games he played as a Warrior, and how many I’ve played, but to be anywhere near him in any record book or now be on top, it’s surreal, and it’s wild. Because if you grow up in the game of basketball and you hear his name, you know it’s something extremely special, no matter what it is.”
Curry was in prime form against Denver, showing off the efficiency that has defined his game throughout his Hall of Fame career, shooting 14-of-24 from the field, and hitting on 10 of his 18 3-point attempts while notching 15 of his 16 free throw attempts.
Warriors Hall of Famer Chris Mullin delivered an emotional message to Curry prior to the game, discussing how much Curry has meant to the organization and thanking him for how Curry has conducted himself during his career.
“I’ve watched you from day one, and it’s just been a pleasure and a joy to watch you. So congratulations, of course, but more importantly, I want to thank you for the way you’ve done it … you bring so much joy and happiness to the world, and it’s so appreciated,” Mullin said. “So I just want to say thank you for that … the way you carry yourself on and off the court, just a true role model for young and old. So really just want to say congratulations and thank you for being you, Steph Curry.”
“You don’t know how much that means, man,” Curry said to Mullin. “That respect means so much to me, my family, and I appreciate that. I’m happy to be able to represent everybody that’s worn this uniform. The guys that are in the rafters like yourself, it’s crazy. It’s crazy to know what tonight meant.”
Following the game, Curry was asked if he thinks about his continued impact on the game.
“A little bit,” Curry said. “But I think, for me, it’s always been one of those situations where it’s much more productive to look forward, stay in the moment, but look forward to what else I want to accomplish. I understand the game has changed a lot. I understand I’ve had a huge part in that. It’s not for me to come up here and try to articulate that. It’s just playing basketball and enjoying what I get to do every day, and that’s why I think good things keep happening, because I try to embrace what’s next. Who I get to go hoop with every day and the challenges of each season.”
