It’s been two weeks since the 2021 NFL Draft, and there have been discussions about the steals of the draft. All of this is a guess at the moment, as the fans and media won’t know until games have been played. However, it’s not gonna stop us from talking about it. Here are five players that have the potential to be some of the biggest steals of the 2021 NFL Draft.
- Penei Sewell, Seventh Overall, Detroit Lions: Question, how does a player ranked as the second or third-best player in the draft end up being taken seventh overall? The answer, everyone in the top six takes either a quarterback or pass catcher. Penei Sewell ended up in a great situation as the Lions already have good pieces on the offensive line with Taylor Decker and Frank Ragnow, the league’s highest-paid center. Sewell comes in not having the pressure of having to be the guy on the offensive line right away. Don’t be surprised if Sewell becomes one of the best tackles in the game five years from now. And the Lions did not have to do anything to get him.
- Landon Dickerson, 37thOverall, Philadelphia Eagles: If it wasn’t for injuries that scared teams, Landon Dickerson would have been a first-round pick. However, because of concerns with health, he fell right into the Eagle’s laps in the second round. Like Sewell, he may have ended up in the right place. The Eagles still have all-pro center Jason Kelce, who Dickerson can learn from this year as he recovers. He doesn’t have to step in right away if he is not ready to go. Whenever Kelce decides to hang it up, Dickerson should be able to step in and take over for him.
- Trevon Moehrig, 43rdOverall, Las Vegas Raiders: A lot of draft experts had Trevon Moehrig as the best safety in the draft and a first-round pick. However, he ended up falling out of the first round and was the third safety taken, after Jevon Holland and Richie Grant. He was a great player for TCU, picking off seven passes in three years with the Horned Frogs. Moehrig gives the Raiders an immediate starter at Free Safety to compliment Jonathan Abram.
- Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, 52ndOverall, Cleveland Browns: Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah would have been a top 20 pick had heart issues not caused him to drop. The Browns get more help at the linebacker position to go along with free agent signing Anthony Walker Jr. Owusu-Koramoah joins a Browns team that gave the Chiefs all they could handle in the Divisional Round last year. If he has no problems with his heart, he’ll play a big part in the Brown’s chase for the Super Bowl.
- Michael Carter, 107thOverall, New York Jets: Michael Carter had the talent to go during the second day of the draft. Carter had back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons at North Carolina and left as the school’s fourth all-time leading rusher. The Jet’s needed help at running back after cutting Le’Veon Bell and having 38-year old Frank Gore as their leading rusher in 2020. Carter should play a big role in the Jets backfield early on and take pressure off of rookie quarterback Zach Wilson.
