The New England Patriots have cut veteran quarterback Cam Newton in a shocking move that will now make rookie Mac Jones the team’s starter moving forward, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick had repeatedly said that Newton was his starter but added that he had to reestablish the position, or that someone, such as Jones, would have to outplay him. Jones did just that.
Jones finished the preseason 36-of-52 for 389 yards, with one touchdown and no interception.
Newton posted a response on Instagram; “I really appreciate all the love and support during this time but I must say … please don’t feel sorry for me. I’m good.”
