The Seattle Seahawks are releasing veteran defensive end Aldon Smith, according to ESPN.

Smith, 31, signed a one-year deal worth $1.127 million with the Seahawks, with $137,500 guaranteed earlier this offseason. Smith spent the last season with the Dallas Cowboys, collecting 5 sacks over 16 games.

Smith was arrested back in April of this year for an alleged second-degree battery, just two days after inking a deal to join the Seahawks. Smith was was accused of choking a man unconscious during an altercation that began inside a coffee shop. According to a police report WWL-TV, Smith had confronted the man about marital issues the man was having with one of Smith’s relatives.

Smith broke into the league impressively, setting an NFL record with 33.5 sacks over his first two seasons and has 52.5 sacks in five seasons, but has had several brushes with the law throughout his career leading to a number of suspensions.
