The Chicago Bears have never fired a head coach during the regular season over the course of their history, but current head coach Matt Nagy may make history by becoming that first Bears head coach to be let go mid-season.
According to ESPN’s Kevin Seifert, Nagy refuted reports that the upcoming Thanksgiving game will be his last at the helm of the Beats (reported by former Chicago Sun-Times journalist Mark Konkol).
“My focus is on these players and Detroit, and that’s it,” Nagy said. “That’s my job as a head coach and a leader, is to do that. These players have been amazing. They’ve been great. You have this quick turnaround after a loss like [Sunday’s to the Ravens], and now here you go. The only thing we can do is focus on the now and do everything we can. Thursday is going to be here quickly.”
Today, more news has come out that indicates the Bears and Nagy will be parting ways soon.
According to the Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs, Nagy canceled the Bears’ scheduled meetings for Tuesday afternoon and did not make any indications that he would be around the organization much longer. Additionally, a number of players seem to be upset at the lack of the direction of the organization throughout this week.
While nothing is concrete at this point, it does appear that Nagy will be fired as head coach in the coming day.
