Sacramento Kings interim head coach Alvin Gentry wasn’t holding back on his thoughts when discussing the team’s dreadful performance during Sunday night’s 127-102 blowout loss at home to the Memphis Grizzlies.
In fact, Gentry took his team to task for a performance he deemed “absolutely ridiculous.”
“It’s the most disappointed I’ve been in 34 years in the NBA, I can honestly say that,” Gentry said, according to ESPN. “That performance was absolutely ridiculous. We didn’t play hard, we didn’t compete. We didn’t guard the ball, we didn’t guard screen and rolls. We didn’t follow the game plan. No competitiveness whatsoever. They basically toyed with us. I’m totally disappointed and everybody in this building should be disappointed.”
The Kings have been one of the league’s worst teams annually for many years, and despite their lottery draft positions each year, and countless changes in the front office and coaching staff, the franchise seems stuck in ineptitude.
Gentry took over as coach when Luke Walton was fired following a 6-11 start to the season. Sacramento has posted a 7-10 record since, under Gentry.
Kings franchise guard De’Aaron Fox struggled in his return after he missed the last two weeks while in the NBA’s health and safety protocol, scoring just 12 points.
“I feel like teams come in here licking their chops for sure,” Kings guard Terence Davis said. “It’s up to us to protect our home court. We have to fix the little things. No excuses whatsoever. Once we get on the same page, all aboard, this team is very talented. It’ll come along.”
