Braves, Cubs Complete Trade of Sean Newcomb, Jesse Chavez

1 Min Read

The Atlanta Braves have acquired right-hander Jesse Chavez, along with cash considerations, from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for reliever Sean Newcomb, according to official announcements from both organizations.

Newcomb has spent that last six seasons with the Braves, where he transitioned from a starting pitcher to a reliever. However, despite his success in that role, the Braves decided to bring him back to a starting rotation role in 2020, which did not go well and eventually led him back to the bullpen. Newcombe continued to struggle in his return to the pen, and got off to another rough start this season.

Chavez has 15 seasons of experience in the majors, and spent the 2021 season with the Braves, pitching to the tune of a 2.14 ERA while not allowing a single home run during any of his 30 appearances.

Chavez has a lack of velocity and a low swinging strike rate, and has only made three appearances for the Cubs.
