The Philadelphia Phillies have fired manager Joe Girardi following a 22-29 start to the season, according to an official announcement made by president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski on Friday.

Philadelphia current sits at 22-29, has lost seven of their last nine games, and are third place in the National League East, sitting 12 games behind the New York Mets.

“It has been a frustrating season for us up until this point, as we feel that our club has not played up to its capabilities,” Dombrowski said. “While all of us share the responsibility for the shortcomings, I felt that a change was needed and that a new voice in the clubhouse would give us the best chance to turn things around.”

Girardi would make his regular appearance on Sirius XM’s MLB Network Radio following his dismissal, and said; “We underperformed and that falls on me. This is what happens.”

Girardi, 57, had been at the helm for the last three seasons, posting a 132-141 record and failing to bring the Phillies back to the playoffs, where they have not been since 2011.
