Washington Commanders tight end Antonio Gandy-Golden officially announced his retirement on Thursday, closing a brief career that began when he was selected during the 4th rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Gandy-Golden, 24, informed Washington coach Ron Rivera about his plans prior to the morning practice, stating that he wanted to return to college and finish his education, where he majored in graphic design.
Gandy-Golden played college football at Liberty University prior to joining Washington, where injuries derailed his rookie season.
Gandy-Golden finished with 1 reception for 3 yards and 1 carry for 22 yards.
“He was doing a really good job,” Rivera said, according to ESPN’s John Keim. “He was making good strides in OTA and minicamp, and he showed his ability. We felt this is a guy who could have been a matchup problem for us, so I was a little surprised.”
Rivera speculated that Gandy-Golden had lost his passion for football, which also contributed to his decision.
“That’s what it sounded like,” Rivera said. “He just didn’t feel it right now. He wanted to finish his education and see what else is out there for him.
“Because he’s a bright young man, I believe he has a bright future.”
