Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota, who signed with the team back in March during free agency, says that he ready to compete for the Falcons starting job after spending the majority of the last several seasons as a backup.

Mariota is in a competition for the starting gig with rookie Desmond Riddler.

“It’s a great opportunity for me to prove, not only to myself but to those who have believed in me,” Mariota said, according to ESPN. “So, I’m excited. The last couple of years was a great reset. I learned a lot from Derek. I learned a lot from being there. I feel ready to go.”

Thus far, Mariota has impressed, including head coach Arthur Smith.

“Certainly his experiences brought him to this place,” Smith said. “And he’s in a good rhythm. He’s in a good flow out there.”
