The San Diego Padres missed on Aaron Judge but they did land star shortstop Xander Bogaerts, agreeing to terms with the longtime Boston Red Sox star to an 11-year, $280 million contract, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Bogaerts now joins a Padres team that includes Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, and Juan Soto. Bogaerts is expected to remain at shortstop with Ha-Seong Kim expected to make a move to second base and Jake Cronenworth taking over first base duties.
Bogaerts won a pair of World Series and made four All-Star teams during his long tenure with the Red Sox, and is coming off a fantastic season in 2022 in which he hit .307/.377/.456 with 15 home runs and 73 RBIs in 150 games.
Following the deal with Bogaerts, the Padres’ payroll spikes to more than $250 million.
The Padres last made the World Series in 1998 and have not yet won a World Series championship.
