The Washington Commanders have placed the franchise tag on defensive tackle Daron Payne, who becomes the first player to receive the tag this offseason, according to a team announced on Tuesday.
Should Payne play on the franchise tag he is projected to receive $18.937 million, but since it is a nonexclusive tag Payne is free to speak with other teams, however Washington has started negotiations on a long-term contract with Payne.
The Commanders have until July 17th to work out a long-term deal with Payne, who is coming off a solid year, and if they cannot do so they will not be able to negotiate with him until after the conclusion of the 2023 season.
Payne recorded a career-high 11.5 sacks last season for the Commanders, finished tied for eighth in the NFL with 21 tackles for loss and second among interior linemen. Payne was named an alternate for the Pro Bowl and was added to the game when others could not attend.
