The Washington Commanders have released veteran quarterback Carson Wentz following just one season with the team, in a long expected move that Washington $26.176 million on the salary cap this offseason.
Wentz, who had two years remaining on his contract, was released alongside veteran defensive back Bobby McCain on Monday, and if Wentz is designated as a post-June 1 release, the Commanders would save $4.42 million.
Wentz is now free to sign with any team prior to the start of free agency, and there could be an opportunity for him with the Carolina Panthers where his former coach with the Indianapolis Colts Frank Reich is now the head coach, who was also with him during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles.
While Wentz has faltered in starting roles the past few seasons, it is possible that there could be a backup role for him in Carolina, among other potential landing spots.
The Commanders traded two third-round picks and swapped second-round picks in 2022 to acquire Wentz from Indianapolis last offseason, but struggled on offense with his new team and missed eight games due to a broken right finger.
