Yankees Send Willie Calhoun to Minors While Finalizing Roster

1 Min Read

The New York Yankees, like many other teams, are finalizing their rosters for Opening Day on Thursday and have made a number of decisions regarding what to do with some of their young players to start the 2023 season.

According to ESPN’s Marly Rivera, the Yankees are sending former highly-regarded prospect Willie Calhoun, outfielder, to the minor leagues and are also optioning right handed pitcher Greg Weissert.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that outfielder Estevan Florial is headed to New York with the team and will be part of their roster as the season kicks off, and Florial will be joined by outfielder Rafael Ortega as well.

“Ortega and Florial are going with us to New York. But there’s nothing guaranteed there either right now,” Boone said. “It’s unfortunate with our team and not having a lot of optionable guys. You don’t want to get in a situation where you have to burn an option early in the year. It is difficult because he’s a big part of what’s going on in there, and will continue to be.”
