Buccaneers Name Baker Mayfield Starter

1 Min Read

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made their decision as to whom will start the season under center as the franchise’s #1 quarterback.

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles announced that veteran signal caller Baker Mayfield will be the team’s starting quarterback, after Mayfield beat out third-year player Kyle Trask during training camp, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.

Mayfield had been widely expected to be the starter since inking a free agent deal with the Bucs during the offseason. Despite struggling over the last two seasons, Mayfield provides plenty of experience and has had success early on in his career, with the Cleveland Browns.

The Bucs mark Mayfield’s fourth team over the span of three seasons, a journey well documented by both NFL journalists and fans on social media who have followed the downfall of Mayfield’s on-field performance.

Mayfield went 1-3 as the Rams’ starter last season, throwing for 850 yards with 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

Trask was setup to succeed Tom Brady following the future Hall of Famer’s retirement, but Trask has yet to secure the starting job.
