Panthers’ Shaq Thompson Out For Season

2 Min Read

Carolina Panthers star linebacker Shaq Thompson is expected to miss the remainder of the 2023 regular season after undergoing surgery to repair a broken fibula on Tuesday morning, according to ESPN’s David Newton.

Many Panthers and NFL journalists were on hand when Panthers head coach Frank Reich spoke about the impact of losing Thompson, who was officially placed on injured reserve later on Tuesday.

“It’s hard to put that into words,” Reich said. “We talk about a brotherhood — he is just a close brother. This is a warrior. This is a guy who knows how to practice, he knows how to play, he’s a team-first player.

“I was texting him last night. He’s talking about ways he can get back before he gets all the news [about needing surgery], trying to figure out a way he’s going to help the team. These injuries hurt.”

Thompson posted the following on social media regarding his injury: “Minor setback, Major comeback! Don’t count me out! Real panthers fans, I love y’all and I love this city, I truly felt the love in that stadium! To my teammates, I love yall boys and y’all know I’ll be here for y’all every step!”

Thompson was injured when Saints left tackle Trevor Penning was slung to the ground by Panthers defensive end DeShawn Williams.
