The San Francisco 49ers are suspending linebacker De’Vondre Campbell three games for conduct detrimental to the team after Campbell refused to enter Thursday night’s game against the Los Angeles Rams, according to NFL Network.
Campbell’s refusal to play was a big talking point and upset Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan along with other members of the team.
“It’s not something you can do to your team or your teammates and still get to be a part of our team,” Shanahan said back on Friday (h/t ESPN).
San Francisco had the option to cut Campbell, 31, which would have sent the linebacker to waivers allowing him to potentially sign with another team to play out the remainder of the season, but by going the route of a suspension, the 49ers can recoup some of the $3.35 million signing bonus they gave Campbell.
Campbell signed with the 49ers back in March on a one-year, $5 million deal.
Campbell will be an unrestricted free agent after the season.
