Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout is making the move from center field to right field this season with hope that he can preserve his health more effectively following a strong of seasons riddled with injuries.
Trout, who is a three-time AL MVP, only played in 82 or fewer games in three of the past four seasons while dealing with a variety of injuries, not including 53 games he played in 2020 which was shortened due to the COVID pandemic.
Trout approached the organization about the switch from center to right.
“I kind of threw everything on the table as in what’s best for me bodywise to keep me on the field,” Trout said, according to ESPN. “I came to the conclusion that I’m going to go to right field. I’ll try it out and see where it goes.”
While Trout understands that situations could force him to play some centerfield this season, and will likely also see much more time playing as designated hitter, he is focused on his new spot in right field.
“I knew it was coming, but I’ve just got to get used to it,” Trout said. “I just want to be on the field.”
“I’ve just got to be honest with them on how I feel,” Trout said. “They obviously will try to give me days off, but I want to be out there.”
“Just look at my last couple of years,” Trout said. “I want to preserve the legs and go out there and run some balls down in right.”
