The Atlanta Falcons are expected to release veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins prior to the start of the new league year this upcoming March which will allow Cousins the opportunity to choose where he wants to play next season, if he even wants to play, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The Falcons recently restructured Cousins’ contract with the belief that doing so would be easier for both the team and Cousins if the signal caller was released sooner as opposed to later, which gives Cousins what he wanted in an ability to choose his next team and gives the Falcons the financial flexibility they were hoping for.
Cousins and the Falcons modified the final two years in his contract, changing his 2026 base salary from $35 million to $2.1 million but adding the leftover $32.9 million to his 2027 base salary to now make it $67.9 million.
However, if Cousins were to remain on the Falcons roster at start of the league year in mid-March then that $69.7 million would become guaranteed.
Cousins, 37, threw for 1,721 yards with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions in 10 games last season for Atlanta.
