Screw a suspension… Latrell Sprewell should have be incarcerated for inflicting such wounds on P.J. Carlesimo.

15 years ago today on December 1, 1997, batshit crazy Golden State Warriors shooting guard Latrell Sprewell twice assaulted newly hired head coach P.J. Carlesimo during a team practice.

According to witnesses, Carlesimo screamed at the then 27-year-old Sprewell, who the Warriors took out of the University of Alabama with the 24th pick in the 1992 NBA Draft, to “put a little mustard” on his passes.

In response, the 6-foot-5, 195 pound Sprewell, who previously as a Warrior got into separate fistfights with badass colleagues Jerome Kersey and Byron Houston, warned Carlesimo to avoid him like anthrax.

Carlesimo, a two-time Big East Conference coach of the year who was named Seton Hall University’s “Coach of the Century” in 1999, refused to cower and proceeded to walk toward the pathetic bully.

Until ultimately losing to the Miami Heat in the playoffs, the New York Knicks will dominate throughout the season

The Knicks will give their fans plenty to cheer about this season.

After outclassing the bush league Orlando Magic 99-89 on Tuesday night to improve to 5-0 and remain the only unbeaten team in the NBA, it is evident that the New York Knickswill be a lasting, and powerful, force in the Eastern Conference throughout the 2012-2013 season.

The Knicks, who have won their opening five games for the first time since advancing to the finals in 1994, are a veteran unit designed to win now.

Although a glorified version of The Golden Girls in high tops, New York, with six-time All-Star and 2007 All-NBA First Team selection Amar’e Stoudemirefive-time All-Star Carmelo Anthonyfive-time All-NBA First Team selection Jason Kidd2012 Defensive Player of the Year Tyson Chandler and effective ballplayers Marcus CambyRasheed WallaceRaymond FeltonJ.R. Smith and Steve Novak, finally has an opportunity to compete for their first franchise title since 1973.

The 39-year-old Kidd, the only man in league history to amass at least 15,000 points, 7,000 rebounds, and 10,000 assists in his career, and Felton make a formidable duo in the backcourt.

Ideally complementing the point guard’s, the 38-year-old Camby, a two-time member of the NBA All-Defensive Team who earned the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2006-07, Wallace, Stoudemire and Chandler give the Knicks invaluable muscle in the paint.

The five greatest sports sound bites since 2000

Herman Edwards will always be famous for one memorable press conference.

10 years ago yesterday on October 30, 2002, in response to the Jets losing to theCleveland Browns and falling to 2-5, New York head coach Herman Edwards ranted “you play to win the game” during a Wednesday press conference.

Although a bush league motivational ploy with little actual substance, Edwards’ speech oddly still resonates a decade later.

In tribute to Herman Edwards’ tirade, below are the five best sports sound bites since 2000.

1. With Edwards at the helm, the Jets pulverized the Indianapolis Colts 41-0 in a 2002 Wild Card playoff game at Giants Stadium in the swamps of Jersey.

In contrast to the opinions of seventy percent of league general managers, the Los Angeles Lakers, and not the Miami Heat, will win the Larry O’Brien NBA Championship Trophy in June

The collection of talent on the Los Angeles Lakers is surreal.

In stark contrast to the opinions of seventy percent of the league’s general managers, theLos Angeles Lakers will prevent the Miami Heat from going back-to-back and the organization will capture its 18th Larry O’Brien NBA Championship Trophy this June.

The Lakers, who open their season on Tuesday against the Dallas Mavericks at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, added future Hall of Fame point guard Steve Nash and powerful center Dwight Howard this offseason to an already formidable roster consisting of iconic shooting guard Kobe Bryantfour-time All-Star Pau Gasolbatshit crazy 2004 Defensive Player of the Year Metta World Peace and two-time All-Star power forward Antawn Jamison.

Conversely, the Heat, who trumped the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games to earn a crown last summer, inked shooting guard Ray Allen, a 10-time All-Star who is the greatest three-point artist in NBA history, to a two-year deal worth in excess of $6 million to bolt Beantown for South Beach in July.

Despite struggling mightily, Kevin McHale and the Houston Rockets should ride Jeremy Lin ‘like freakin’ Secretariat’

Jeremy Lin will ultimately thrive as a Rocket in Houston.

Despite struggling mightily after three preseason games, Houston Rockets head coach Kevin McHale shelved Jeremy Lin against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday night strictly to rest the Asian-American phenomenon.

The 24-year-old Lin, who suffered a torn left meniscus in late-March that required season-ending surgery, averaged 14.6 points and 6.2 assists in 35-games as a member of the New York Knicks in 2012.

Quite shockingly, Lin vacated Gotham and inked a four-year deal worth approximately $28 million with the Rockets as a restricted free agent in July.

“We had planned on this already,” said McHale, 54, a Hall of Fame power forward who replaced Rick Adelman as Houston’s coach in June 2011. “This was his day off in his knee rehab. He had surgery and took a long time off. He’s just getting his confidence back, trying to get his mojo going which is very common.”

With Dwight Howard reportedly healed and dominating practice activities, it’s hard to envision that the 2012-2013 Los Angeles Lakers won’t become one of the greatest teams ever assembled

A healthy Dwight Howard will make the Lakers virtually unbeatable.

Roughly five months after undergoing outpatient surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back, Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard reportedly thrived participating in drills and activities during his first practice of the season on Tuesday.

Los Angeles landed the 26-year-old Howard, who the Orlando Magic took out of Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy first overall in the 2004 draft, as part of a four-team, 12-player deal in August.

The 6-foot-11, 265 pound Howard, a five-time member of the All-NBA First Team and three-time earner of the Defensive Player of the Year, should be fully healed and “unbelievable” when the Lakers open the regular season against the Clippers on November 2 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

“He was dunking everything in sight,” said a source who watched Howard practice. “He looks like he can play in an NBA game today.”

A vintage Howard, not one walking like a glorified version of Quasimodo, easily gives Los Angeles the preeminent squad in the league.

Memorable sports moment of the week – Michael Jordan officially announces he will return to the NBA as a player with the Washington Wizards

http://sportsbycolin.com/memorable-sports-moment-of-the-week-michael-jordan-officially-announces-he-will-return-to-the-nba-as-a-player-with-the-washington-wizards/#

Michael Jordan continued to play at a high level with the lowly Washington Wizards.

11 years ago today on October 1, 2001, the iconic Michael Jordan officially proclaimed he was returning to play in the NBA for two seasons with the Washington Wizards.

Although it was widely known that Jordan, a five-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) and member of the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team, was planning a return to the hardwood, the September 11 terrorist attacks, and various professional issues, caused the formal announcement to be delayed.

“I am returning as a player to the game I love,” said a then 38-year-old Jordan, who last competed when he propelled the Chicago Bulls to a crown over the Utah Jazz in a remarkable Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals. “I am especially excited about the Washington Wizards, and I’m convinced we have the foundation on which to build a playoff-contention team.”

The 10-time NBA scoring champion, who shortly thereafter made his regular season debut on October 30 at Madison Square Garden against the New York Knicks, continued explaining his choice to the media.

Although the sharpshooter is ‘a good person to talk to on the phone,’ Kevin Garnett tossed Ray Allen’s digits

Kevin Garnett has turned his back on Ray Allen.

Miami Heat shooting guard Ray Allen said after practice today that he still considers former teammate Kevin Garnett to be a friend despite the Boston Celtics power forward’s claim to the contrary.

The 6-foot-11, 253 pound Garnett, a 14-time All-Star and four-time All-NBA First Team selection, remains heated that Allen bolted for South Beach in July.

“I don’t have Ray’s number anymore,” said Garnett, 36, a nine-time All-Defensive First Team choice and 2004 Most Valuable Player. “I’m not trying to communicate. I’m just being honest with everybody in here. … It’s just what it is.”

In the summer of 2008, Allen, a 10-time All-Star who is the greatest three-point artist in league history, and Garnett helped lead the Celtics over the Los Angeles Lakers four games to two in a best-of-seven series to capture the fabled franchise’s first Larry O’Brien NBA Championship Trophy since 1986 and its 17th title overall.

The Heat and Celtics have developed a bitter rivalry and Garnett’s livid with Allen’s decision that undoubtedly has Benedict Arnold smirking in his grave.

Will Adam Morrison finally bloom this winter as a member of the Portland Trail Blazers in ‘Rose City?’

http://sportsbycolin.com/will-adam-morrison-finally-bloom-this-winter-as-a-member-of-the-portland-trail-blazers-in-rose-city/#

It may finally be Adam Morrison’s time to stand and shine.

In response to guard Elliot Williams’ season-ending Achilles injury last week, the Portland Trail Blazers have invited former Gonzaga University standout Adam Morrison to training camp to compete for a roster spot this October.

The 6-foot-8, 205 pound Morrison, who the Charlotte Bobcats took with the third overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft, impressed scouts by averaging 20 points and five rebounds for the Los Angeles Clippers summer league team in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“What (Morrison) did this summer (with the Clippers) was tremendous,” said Morrison’s agent, Mark Bartelstein. “I just think it’ll be a great opportunity for him. I don’t know that there’s ever been a guy who got less of an opportunity in the NBA who came out as highly drafted as Adam did. He had a really good rookie year, and then tore his ACL and really hasn’t had a chance to play since then.”

Already a jackass, Nick Hogan looks more foolish than ever commenting on Jerry Lawler

http://sportsbycolin.com/already-a-jackass-nick-hogan-looks-more-foolish-than-ever-commenting-on-jerry-lawler/#

Nick Hogan has no right to discuss Jerry Lawler at this particular time.

After Jerry Lawler suffered a mild heart attack while working as a color commentator earlier this week on Monday Night RawHulk Hogan’s son, Nicktold TMZ that “The King” should consider retiring.

The 62-year-old Lawler, a native of Memphis, Tennessee, who has captured an astounding 168 titles since making his debut in the squared circle in 1970, remains listed in stable condition at a cardiac care unit in Montreal.

Thankfully, several CT scans have shown that Andy Kaufman’s erstwhile “nemesis” has not been afflicted with brain damage.

While Lawler continues recovering, Nick, a 22-year-old ex-convict known for appearing on the reality show Hogan Knows Best, said wrestling “takes a toll” on the human body and “most guys retire around 50ish.”
