In the NFL, if you don’t have a solid quarterback, your chances of winning decrease significantly. The Arizona Cardinals know that and although they have veteran signal caller Carson Palmer coming back for another season, their front office knows they need to find the quarterback of the future.
Cardinals’ General manager Steve Keim spoke about the need to find a young quarterback, via the Cardinals official website, and the pressure he is putting on himself to find that guy.
“There’s no doubt every GM, there is no question your name has to be put on a young quarterback at some point,” Keim said on last week’s edition of the “Big Red Rage.” “I challenge myself every day,because if you look around the league, you’re not a GM for long if you don’t find (a quarterback). I have to do a better job, with my staff and the coaching staff, we have to identify the right guy and put this organization in positon to have success for years to come.”
Even their current quarterback Carson Palmer, knows that his career is coming to a close which would leave Arizona in need of a new starting quarterback.
“At this point in my career, it’s a one-year-at-a-time-type of deal,” Palmer said when he announced he would be returning for another season.
“You start getting old like me, you start getting grey hair, your body starts telling you no,” Palmer said. “At some point it will.”
The Cardinals haven’t had much success in finding their quarterback of the future. Matt Leinart, Logan Thomas, Matt Barkley and Zac Dysert are just some of the underwhelming names the Cardinals have kicked the tires on in years passed.
The draft will likely be Arizona’s best bet, but a weak quarterback class leaves many to wonder if it’s wise for Arizona to spend a high draft pick on a signal caller in this year’s draft. They may have to play the waiting game a bit longer than they would have liked.
