One of the NFL”s under-the-radar coach signings happened out in Baltimore when the Ravens added former San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Greg Roman this offseason. Roman will be the team’s assistant head coach and tight ends coach.
You may remember Roman, who was the Buffalo Bills public fall guy last season, fired early in the season as Rex Ryan’s team struggled offensively. Roman was replaced by new Chargers’ head coach Anthony Lynn and Ryan was fired later in the season.
Roman has been criticized for being too one-dimensional, something he and Baltimore hopes he can improve on as he joins the Ravens staff. In Buffalo, the Bills finished second in rushing attempts and first in rushing yards each of the last two seasons and one of the main reasons Roman was eventually let go was due to the lack of offensive creativity.
“I wouldn’t try to pigeonhole us just yet that we’re going to try to be ground and pound,” Roman said, via the Ravens’ official website. “Who really wins big doing that? I think you have to have balance. But that doesn’t mean we’re not going to make people respect us in that phase of the game.”
Baltimore could use some creativity on offense and Roman needs to re-invent himself. It seems like both parties have a great opportunity to make some strides next season.
