Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott will reportedly sit out the entire 2019 season if he is unable to land a new contract with the Cowboys, according to ESPN’s Josina Anderson during an appearance on ‘Get Up’.
“The source said back to me: ‘Yes, it is true” Anderson said (h/t Bleacher Report’s Mike Chiari).
“Ezekiel Elliott will not play this season if he doesn’t have a new contract, and matter of fact, added that he told the Cowboys this back in January. So then I asked the source, ‘But is it likely, though?’ I think that’s the more apropos question, and he said, no, I don’t think it’s likely from the standpoint that Jerry Jones, we believe, wants to get this deal done and he understands that out of Amari Cooper, Dak Prescott, that there’s only one player who’s actually the top at his position and that’s Ezekiel Elliott.”
Currently, Elliott is holding out during Cowboys training camp and is under a contract that is slated to pay him $3.85 million this season. His fifth-year option will officially kick in in 2020 and play him $9.099 million, barring a new deal being agreed to.
Elliott, 24, isn’t the only Cowboy looking for a new deal as quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper are also in line for new deals. However, Prescott and Cooper are entering the final year of their respective deals while Elliott has two years remaining on his current contract.
