The Washington Redskins have finally done what many were expecting them to do: fire head coach Jay Gruden, according to ESPN’s John Keim.
The Redskins fired Gruden following their 33-7 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday, which dropped their record to 0-5 on the season.
“Through the first five games of the 2019 season, the team has clearly not performed up to expectations, and we all share in that responsibility,” the team said in a statement. “Moving forward we are committed to doing all that we can collectively as an organization to turn things around and give our Redskins fans and alumni a team they can be proud of in 2019 and beyond.”
Taking over for Gruden will be assistant head coach/offensive line coach Bill Callahan, who will serve as the interim head coach as the team starts preparations for the search for their next head coach.
Gruden had one more year remaining on his contract after this season, and becomes the fifth coach fired by Redskins’ team owner Dan Snyder, including names such as Norv Turner, Marty Schottenheimer, Jim Zorn and Mike Shanahan.
No coach has finished with a winning record under Snyder, showing just one of the many layers of dysfunction within the organization under Snyder’s watch.
Prior to his hiring, Gruden was the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals.
