Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is set to undergo hip surgery on Monday following an evaluation in Houston, Texas, according to a statement from team orthopedic surgeon Lyle Cain.
Tagovailoa dislocated his hip on Saturday, during Alabama’s convincing win over Mississippi State, and reportedly also suffered a posterior wall fracture, according to ESPN.
“For the past 24 hours our medical team has consulted with multiple orthopedic experts across the country, who specialize in hip injuries and surgeries. Based on that research, Tua is being flown to Houston tonight to be evaluated and is scheduled to have hip surgery Monday,” Cain said, via the official statement.
Tagovailoa was hurt with the Crimson Tide leading 35-7, and was still in the game because Alabama head coach Nick Saban said they were practicing a two-minute drill and that series was to be Tagovailoa’s final of the game.
The injury is devastating for Tagovailoa, who has battled injuries this year, and will surely severely impact his NFL Draft status. Tagovailoa has been considered, by many, to be a potential #1 overall pick, but now may be a late 1st rounder, or 2nd round draft selection following the latest injury.
“As previously stated, we anticipate a full recovery. The main focus has been, and will remain, on Tua, his family, and making sure we are providing them the best medical care possible.”
Tagovailoa will now be undergoing his second surgery, as he had surgery back on October 20th on his right ankle following an injury he suffered during a victory over Tennessee earlier this season.
