Ex-NFL Player Joe Horn Facing 10 Years In Prison After Pleading Guilty to Health Care Scam

2 Min Read

Former NFL wide receiver Joe Horn, who is know for this time playing for the New Orleans Saints, is facing around 10 years in prison after pleading guilty for his part in the league’s retired health care plan scam that took nearly $150,000, according to TMZ Sports.

Horn was among a number of former NFL players, including former Washington Redskins’ running back Clinton Portis, who were officially charged by federal prosecutors a few weeks ago with defrauding the Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Account Plan.

Horn, 47, agreed to plea guilty to one charge of conspiracy to commit health care fraud.

The scam involved 10 former NFL players who sought reimbursements for things such as medical equipment, prescriptions, and other medical items that they never actually purchased.

Per court documents, Horn took the plea deal with the hopes a judge will take it easy on him at his sentencing hearing later next year, but the charge carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, a fine up to $250,000, and probation.

Horn admitted to submitting two false claims that totaled up to $149,775, which he will have to pay back.

Horn is widely considered one of the franchise’s best players, and tallied 7,865 receiving yards and 51 receiving TDs in his 7 years with the Saints.
